DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — (9:15 a.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol urge motorists to drive with caution as flooding affects area highways in Wilkin and Big Stone counties.

Road closures

The following state highways are closed until further notice:

Highway 75 near Kent is closed from Wilkin County Road 24 to Wilkin County Road 22. Water is receding, but Mn/DOT crews are repairing washed out shoulders and a section of roadway under the railroad bridge. Traffic continues to be detoured using Wilkin County Roads 3 and 26.
Highway 12 east of Ortonville is closed from Highway 75 to Big Stone County Road 21. The roadway is under water, causing dangerous driving conditions. Traffic is detoured using Highway 75 and Big Stone County Road 21.

Open – use caution

The following state highways are currently open but conditions can change rapidly. Motorists should use extreme caution approaching the following areas:

Highway 12 east of Big Stone County Road 21 at Horseshoe Lake – Open to traffic, watch for water on the roadway.

Open – water receded

The following state highways are open and water has receded – water is no longer a threat to the roadway:

Highway 75 one mile north of Kragnes – Open to traffic.
Highway 200 east of Mahnomen at Twin Lake Creek between Mahnomen County Roads 3 and 4 – Open to traffic.

The following state highways are closed until further notice:

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — (9:45 a.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol urge motorists to drive with caution as flooding affects area highways in Clay, Wilkin, Mahnomen and Big Stone counties.

Highway 75 near Kent is closed from Wilkin County Road 24 to Wilkin County Road 22. The roadway is under water, causing dangerous driving conditions. Traffic is detoured using Wilkin County Roads 3 and 26.

Motorists should also watch for icy patches at or near these areas as the weather forecast calls for colder temperatures and wind over the next few days.

52nd Ave. South Lane Reductions

Due to dike construction, eastbound traffic on 52^nd Ave. South from 42^nd St. to 38^th St. will be reduced to one lane until dike construction is complete in this area.

52^nd Ave. South, east of University Drive, will be reduced to one lane to make room for the construction of a clay dike around Riverview. Drivers are asked to use caution and allow extra time as the National Guard will be flagging traffic to allow the bridge to remain open during construction.

Dike Construction is these areas will begin at approximately 1:00 p.m. this afternoon (Wednesday, March 17).

Cass County Needs Volunteers

Cass County officials are urging residents and students to help with sandbagging today. Volunteers are to report to the UP Center where they will be shuttled to areas in need.

Local Students Continue to Help Sandbag Effort

Local middle school and high school students are again taking the time to help protect our community by filling and placing sandbags along the Red River. Today, Wednesday, March 17 approximately 1,600 students from Fargo Public Schools, Shanley and West Fargo Public Schools will assist at sandbag central and in neighborhoods which still need help building sandbag dikes. Below is a list of some of the locations where students will be volunteering:

Fargo South students – River Vili, Harwood Grove and Timberline
Fargo North students – Peterson Parkway/Lilac Lane/ Woodcrest
Shanley students – Belmont Park and Southwood
West Fargo students – Rose Creek
Oak Grove Students – Oak Grove

In addition, nearly 900 students from Fargo Public Schools have excused absences and are helping sandbag in their own neighborhoods.

Sandbag Count and Delivery for March 17

As of today, Wednesday, March 17, 935,000 sandbags have been filled at sandbag central and 700,000 have been delivered to Fargo neighborhoods. Organizers hope to fill 65,000 sandbags today which would complete our goal of filling one-million sandbags. This goal is expected to be reached this afternoon. At that time sandbag filling operations will be put on hold and the “Denny’s Bucks for Bags” program will end.

Volunteers are still asked to help our community by placing sandbags in neighborhoods. Shuttles will be transporting residents to and from neighborhoods from the shuttle site at First Assembly of God Church, 3401 25^th St. S., Fargo. Shuttles will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

1st Ave N Bridge to Close at 9:30am

Sandbagging Volunteers Urgently Needed in Fargo

Volunteers are urgently needed in Fargo and Cass County to help with sandbagging efforts. Volunteers for Fargo are asked to meet at First Assembly of God Church (door L) at 3401 25^th St. South in Fargo. Volunteers for Cass County are asked to meet at the Urban Plains Center at 5225 31^st Ave. South, Fargo.

Fargo Sandbag Delivery Schedule for Tuesday, March 16

Convoys are on schedule to deliver semi-trailer loads of sandbags to designated locations starting this morning, Tuesday, March 16. Delivery locations include:

Oak Creek
Copperfield Court
Meadow Creek
Silver Leaf
Southwood
Oak Grove
Belmont
15th Ave. N. to 35th Ave. N.
Timberline

On Monday, March 15 volunteers filled 110,000 sandbags and convoys delivered 86 truckloads of sandbags to neighborhoods. Volunteers have now filled a total of 850,000 sandbags at sandbag central. We anticipate reaching our goal of 1-million sandbags on Wednesday, March 17.

Fargo Residents Asked to Discharge Sump Pumps Outside

Residents are being asked to discharge their sump pumps outside instead of into the sanitary sewer while the river level is above flood stage. This will help protect and maintain the functionality of the sanitary sewer. City ordinance requires sump pumps to be discharged outside starting April 1, however due to flooding we ask that residents begin immediately.
