Contaminated well water poses threat

Due to the historic and wide-ranging flood disaster of 2009, many private and municipal wells throughout the area have been inundated with river, overland, and field run-off flood waters. Do not use contaminated water for drinking, brushing your teeth, preparing food, washing dishes, or making ice.

Fargo Cass Public Health is offering well disinfecting information and a no-cost sampling kit by calling the Environmental Health Division at 701-298-6986 or 701-298-6997. Kits can be picked up at 435 14th Avenue South-Fargo, or mailed out by request.

After disinfecting a well, a water sample should be submitted to the laboratory immediately, so that a bacteriological analysis can be conducted within 30 hours. If harmful bacteria are still present after disinfecting the well, the process should be repeated.

  1. Flood Insurance, I have a flood policy that took effect of the 2nd, but since we reached flood stage well before that date I will not be covered until we are not in flood danger.

  2. Does anyone know exactly whose water is contaminated?!

I live in North Fargo by NDSU campus. Do I need to worry?

  3. No - this is primarily a warning for well water in the country.
