New prediction warns of second 40 - 41 ft crest

The National Weather Service is now predicting with strong confidence a secondary crest exceeding 37 feet, reaching 40-41 feet in a “worst case scenario” sometime in mid-April. Estimates are based on the current amount of ice in the fields, the expected snow from a snow storm entering the region, and precipitation from future storm systems.

  1. It is important to remember that the 40-41 secondary crest is a “worst case scenario”. The middle 30 foot range is the higher probability.

  2. That’s still bad though. What does this mean about cleanup now, and for future sandbag efforts? Will we have to do this last week and a half over again? Will schools likely be closed? I’m quite interested.

  3. How is this going to effect us are they going to do clean up after this is over or continue to monitor what we have and clean the flood things after this second crest.

  5. Think we should fix the glitches when we can for the next crest. Everyone’s doin their best, lets keep it up.

  6. It’s hard now, and may be for some time, but there are people out there just waiting to come help us clean up. A group called Samaritan’s Purse has people from as far away as Florida, and all over the country, who are making plans right now to come and help with the cleanup. Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church in Moorhead is going to be their “headquarters.”

  7. I’d expect some of the existing sandbag levees to be reinforced with clay or additional sandbags to enhance the level of protection currently seen. You guys are in good hands with Dennis Walacker and Mark Bittner at the helm.

  8. I just don’t want to go home, clean it up and get hit again. I am worried the worst is yet to come. Mother Nature and the Red River has minds of their own, and if they want to go nuts they will. Let’s hope things get better. I am just worried people will get too confident, and end up getting hurt from being unprepared.

  9. We are still at the ready. I worked my job and built dikes all last week. There are thousands like me that did the same thing. If need be, we will do it all over again.

  10. So should we be spending the money to have the FargoDome cleaned now? Or wait until the second crest?

  11. I think the nursing home evacuees should be kept away from Fargo, Moorhead until the second crest is far from over.

  12. According to faculty, if the water rises to 40 feet again, MSUM will be evacuated again.

Just thought I’d share that information.
