UPDATE: Volunteers complete Mickelson levee

UPDATE: Volunteers complete project at Mickelson Field. Mickelson volunteers asked to return home, then call volunteer hotline in 3-4 hours to stagger volunteer efforts.

Due to the revised flood crest prediction, the City of Fargo is working to shore up the levee near Mickelson Field.

Volunteers are desperately needed to assist in this effort. If you are able to fill or place sandbags the city is requesting that you walk to the dike in the area of the south side of Mickelson Field. City staff will be at this location to coordinate this important effort.

Again volunteers are asked to walk, not drive to this location, as trucks will be hauling sandbags and need to get as close to the dike as possible.

Volunteer assistance is greatly appreciated in this flood fighting effort. Volunteers may also call the Volunteer Hotline at 701-476-4000 for more information.

  1. I am from St Cloud, MN. Been up to help a few times this week but want to know if I should come up again?

  2. Thanks for what you’ve done. As always - call the volunteer hotline first - 701-476-4000 to find out how to be best utilized.

  3. WHY are businesses such as target open today? Why have they not been shut down? NO travel is requested in Fargo/Moorhead, volunteers are asked to walk to locations to help. Why are these employees driving to work? If they are going to be congesting the roads they may as well be driving to help sandbag!

  6. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. We would like so badly to be there helping, but now live 5 hours away and fear that at this point when we could finally get away, would get there in time for evacuation.

    God bless!

  8. I think it is wise to keep places such as wal-mart, k-mart, menards, nodak, open. some people need things still, some for flood fighting, and some not. And for families that evacuate, maybe they forgot something. This way they don’t need to go a week and a half without items. and I have heard that they are at a reduced stafff so families can tend to their own homes and what not

  9. I just called the Hotline and they said they are overwhelmed with volunteers right now, but that could change in a few hours, so we need to call back then.

  10. Store such as Target can provide needed items in this situation. Several people have come into Target and expressed their gratitude that they are open!

  11. Most of the non-essential places HAVE closed. People still need food, flood supplies, clothing (gloves, boots etc) and things like formula and diapers.

  14. I was planning to head up today and help out but after talking to the Volunteer line, changed my mind. I talked to them twice since last night and both people said that they are not encouraging out of town volunteers due to traffic issues and road closures and the large number of local volunteers they already have. But they also said they still might need help - it changes from hour to hour. I really want to help but I also don’t want to be in the way and add to the chaos. I decided instead to plan on heading up next week when I sure there will be help needed with clean up. I am not trying to influence anyone but just wanted to pass that along…

  16. EXACTLY. Thank you, Jill. People need to coordinate their efforts with the volunteer hotline 701-476-4000 - to not do so is irresponsible.

  17. It’s absolutely amazing to see how everyone from here and all over has pulled together to work together. Some places need to be open for obvious reasons. We closed for 3 days at least where I work and I can’t afford to not work,so I volunteered.Every person can make a difference. We are going to get through this because we are all doing what we can.

  18. We will not be cleaning up next week. The dikes will be up for around 2 months. The water is going to be high for a long time. We will have many crests. Rainy & windy days will be anxious times. They will stress the levies/ dikes. The river is at 40.8 feet now & cold has the melt almost at a standstill. We are still slowly rising. Tomorrow will be warm enough to start melting again. No one can account for all of the variables, but the most educated guesses say our first crest will be Sunday at around 42 feet. Tonight most of us need to rest, while a few keep watch. Tomorrow, we re-assess & shore up an questionable spots & consider adding to the 250,000 bags we have ready right now. It may be good for us to make more, if for no other reason than that they will then be ready to ship to others north of us as their fights start & they have fewer people to do the work & less time to do it in. I was here for the 1997 flood. It took 50 days for the water to go down. There was a lot of work needed throughout that time. Continue to pray for us. This will be a very stressful time.

  19. I have relatives that live in Louisiana and elsewhere. I’ve heard from them that the better part of the the country is amazed with the volunteer effort being put forth by the region. It is a testament to the quality of people who live here and wherever the help is coming from. We can beat this river!

  20. please be careful what you post on here. Steve wrote yesterday that operations were complete at mikkelsen field at 1pm. kinda funny cause i was there tossin sandbags till 3pm. be sure your info is correct before puttin it on here.

  21. Doug, great point - however, I had the info confirmed by the Volunteer Hotline BEFORE approving the comment. I absolutely agree that those relaying information need to be vigilant in their sourcing of information, especially at times when the wrong info could have serious impact in detouring help where and when it is needed. Thanks for your comment, and your volunteer efforts!
